You Make My Day

Ms Freeney and Maria

Ms. Freeney and VNA Meals on Wheels volunteer Maria

For 98-year-old VNA Meals on Wheels client, Ms. Freeney, greeting the day and the friendly volunteers delivering her meals with a joyful smile is what keeps her smiling. Living alone in her tidy West Dallas house, Ms. Freeney raised her family here while working full-time as a housekeeper for more than 40 years. She takes pride in her neat home and in the family portraits hanging on the walls and sitting on shelves.

At nearly 99, Ms. Freeney recollects losing her husband and some of her children, but remains steadfast in being grateful for each day. “God willing, I’ll make it to 99 and beyond!” she says with excitement. Using a walker, Ms. Freeney takes pride in keeping her home bright and cheery—making flowers out of tissue to adorn her colored vases.

Ms. Freeney slowly makes it to the door to greet volunteers and always invites them in for a friendly visit and a big hug. She also shares stories about her time as a housekeeper, her children and grandchildren and the wisdom she has gained over the years. She loves the friendly volunteers who have been delivering food and friendship to her since 2021 and reminds them at each delivery that “You made my day!”

As we begin a new year, Ms. Freeney has a message for all who bless her each day: “May the good Lord keep blessing us all in the new year!” Ms. Freeney, you make our day too!
